Super cute or super creepy? I prefer to think the former, only since I know for a fact that when I was as old as Jodie Foster was in this film (Bugsy Malone...one of my all time favourites which definitely deserves its own post eventually) I would have killed to mince around in a slinky gown like that, acting older than my age. Or better still, one of the girls in the background who get to showcase all the cute Bubsy Berkeley type dance moves. Oh to be 12, living in the 70's, in a 1920's all kid cast gangster send-up musical feature film wearing fur coats, fake pearls, and sporting a dangerous Louise Brooks style bob.

Splish Splash

I improvised a dance to this song the other night when my boyfriend and I were waiting for the kettle to boil. He was so impressed he actually thought I had learned it somewhere else and rehearsed it. It was a very, very lame dance with juvenile gesticulations and 1960's go-go dance moves, but then when I tried to recreate it a second time it wasn't the same... the magical spontaneous dancing gods had left me and I couldn't remember my lame routine!! I'm going to have to embrace the fact that my Splish Splash jig is lost forever and my one-time dancing glory is over.

Milkshake

I was thinking about milk related videos I could post, and I briefly considered "My Humps" by the Blackeyed Peas (because of the line... "Mix your milk with my cocoa puffs, milky, milky cocoa..") , but how could I overlook Kelis?? This song (and not to mention film clip) will stand the test of time. I don't mean that ironically either!  :)

And speaking of lips... I was so obsessed with this song when it came out in 1995. I was 7 and it was a bit scandalous for us as I recall. I remember my friends and I saying "Turn you upside down? What does she even mean??"

It's still one of my favourite songs today except I wish the film clip was a bit prettier... More red and pink colours maybe? Maybe some gratutious shots of Merril blowing kisses at the camera?

 I don't know, but what I definitely do know is that I love her long sheer black t-shirt dress with the huge red love heart. I had a similar one, but mine was a stretch cotton tee and the heart was a hologram..Yes the 90's were the best times ever.

This is my favourite old song at the moment. I saw it on Mad Men on SBS a few weeks a go ("Flight 2", Season 2) and instantly fell in love with it. It was timed so perfectly with the beautiful waitress (Elizabeth Tsing) sashaying out from around the corner of a 1960's Japanese restaurant in slow motion.

I tried to find an actual clip depicting the entire desire-fuelled scene, because these photos of Elizabeth Tsing in the show do not do her justice, nor does Kyu Sakamoto's music video clip do his song any favours either (no offence Kyu, it's just a bit boring).

On Mad Men, when the song is playing, all you see is the glossy black of the waitress' sleek hair, the emerald green of her cheongsam, and the red red red of her lips.
